This lot, with a 40-foot wall of dirt cliff, was formidable and when Lauri Matisse saw it, her jaw dropped. The restrictions of the Los Angeles building codes were even more shocking, allowing for only two retaining walls of 10 feet each or one training wall of 12 feet. The house is literally dug into the hill using 60-foot-deep concrete pile-on footings to secure this house into the cliff-side.
